#Microfiction

You know, I had no idea what microfiction was until like three days ago, but I'm in love with it! I already feel like I'm a better writer from writing just two microfictions.
The first one I wrote, To Be a King, was good, because I'm still on my fantasy, medieval kick from writing my novel; but the one I wrote yesterday called: Perfection's Shadow was even better than my first one. Microfiction, and flashfiction in general really challenges you to get all of your ducks in a row in as little words as you can. In To Be a King, I was really just kind of wanting to get something out there, but then I watched a video on YouTube about how exactly to write flashfiction, and Perfection's Shadow came out absolutely wonderful because I used the suggestions.
One of the suggestions that struck me odd at first was to use a simile or metaphor somewhere. In my mind, I was like "Yeah, okay, it can't be that simple." But it actually was. Similes and metaphors are powerful tools that I really want to try and use more often now.

For instance, what I used in Perfection's Shadow was: "She was as small and fragile as a snowflake, but sharp and cold like one, too."
Just in that small sentence, you're able to get some personality characteristics from whoever this she person is. They're vague, but they're something. That's the hardest part of writing such a small story, in my opinion. I was telling my husband just a month ago about how I didn't think I could ever write a short story because I always want more. I always want there to be plot twists and secrets and lots and lots of character development. Whereas it might be a little hard to do some of the things I want to do in a short story, I can still get a great character development going on, and for me, that's what's important.
I feel like a lot of us read and write books as maybe some kind of escape. Not because life is crappy, but sometimes we all need a break. Sometimes, we need to be someone else. Having vivid, deep characters makes that possible. It makes it possible for us to be someone else for a couple hundred pages.

Well, that's enough deep talk for the day! You can tell I've been reading some psychology stuff! Actually, my husband and I just got finished putting organizational tabs on my DSM-V so I really have been psychology-y lately! Definitely recommend the TAB-IT kit from www.DiagnosticTabs.com! They're extremely well designed, durable, and they look hella pretty! (I'll upload a picture later!)
Pictured right is my coffee mug of the day given to me as a Christmas present by my little brother. I love Cat Grant, and she makes me feel like I have the woman power to do anything I want to do! It's really inspiring and gave me the strength to write Perfect's Shadow. Go check it out on www.Fictionpress.com/u/1105921/ tonight when I upload it!
